Research overview
Why avoid error? On the importance of epistemology
My research is in epistemology, metaepistemology, and applied epistemology. The overarching theme of my work is the importance of meeting epistemic standards like knowledge, justification, and rationality. This theme unites the three main research programmes I am currently developing.

My research is in epistemology, metaepistemology, and applied epistemology. The overarching theme of my work is the importance of meeting epistemic standards like knowledge, justification, and rationality. This theme unites the three main research programmes I am currently developing.
- The importance and normativity of epistemology: a deflationist approach. In what sense and to what extent does it matter to meet epistemic standards when we form beliefs? What type of importance or normativity do these standards possess? I develop what I call a deflationist answer to these questions: the importance or normativity of epistemology is not necessary or categorical, but rather contingent and derivative.
- Deflationism and epistemology. What are the connections between the kind of importance that epistemology has and other mainstream epistemological debates? In particular, what does my deflationist approach mean for more traditional issues concerning the nature of epistemic standards?
- The applied importance of epistemology How do epistemology and epistemic standards matter for concrete, social issues? I have started to explore the epistemological issues raised by (i) our use of the Web) and (ii) caring relationships like friendship.
